Through a survey and interviews, the author examines what reactions and thoughts some Swedish morning newspaper readers and journalists have about climate change and how it is presented in the newspapers. Their expectations and views on the role of the newspapers on the matter are compared. How the way in which climate change is presented in morning newspapers affects the citizens’ ability to make well-informed decisions as consumers and voters is also discussed. The basis of the analytical perspective is the notion that the enormous socio-environmental problem of climate change is a problem of communication and fragmentation of knowledge. Also the right to information in a democracy is part of this foundation. The findings include, e.g., that while readers/citizens primarily want climate knowledge from the news media, interviewed journalists suggest that, while they offer brief news, comments and debates, deeper understanding should come from other sources, as complements for those particularly interested.
